Stuart believes in “providing for today and planning for the future” when it comes to Local Government.
His 34 years in local government started as an elected member on the Papamoa Community council in 1986. He was then elected to the Tauranga District Council in 1989 and became Mayor of Tauranga City Council from 2004 to 2016. From 2016 to now he has been a councillor of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. Stuart was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order Merit for services to Local Government.
Stuarts other current roles include being the President of Local Government New Zealand until their AGM in late July, a Director of Quayside Holdings, and a strategic adviser to Rotorua Regional Airport.
Outside of Local Government and prior to becoming the Mayor of Tauranga City, Stuart had business interests in electrical contracting and housing construction.
